6. Februar: Internationaler Tag gegen FGM Weibliche Genitalverstümmelung

Wir freuen uns sehr darüber, dass die Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) sich dem Kampf gegen FGM Weibliche Genitalverstümmelung ohne wenn und aber verschrieben hat. Der Anstoß dieses Engagement war einige ausführliche Gespräche zwischen Tarafa Baghajati als Obmann der IMÖ Initiative muslimischer Österreicher-innen und dem OIC Generalsekretär Prof. Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu. IPHRC calls for measures to prohibit Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

On the occasion of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), February 6, the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) expressed its deep concern that the harmful practice of Female Genital Mutilations (FGM) continues to exist in various regions of the world, constituting a serious threat to the physical and psychological health of women and girls. According to the July 2013 report of UNICEF there are over 125 million alive women and girls who have undergone some form of FGM and there are over 30 million girls at risk in the next decade.

The Commission called upon all OIC Member States to take all necessary measures to prohibit FGM and to protect women and girls from this form of violence.

It also urged Member States to pursue systematic and culturally sensitive comprehensive policies to educate and raise awareness among allfactions of societies on the negative implications of this harmful practice as well as to promote the empowerment of women in all walks of life.
